What is a Salary Slip?
A salary slip (also called a payslip or pay stub) is an official document issued by an employer to an employee every month detailing the breakdown of their salary. It lists all components of earnings — such as basic salary, allowances, and bonuses — along with all statutory and voluntary deductions like Provident Fund, Professional Tax, ESI, and income tax. The resulting net payable amount is what gets credited to the employee's bank account.
Under Indian labour law, every employer is legally required to provide employees with a salary slip for each pay period. A salary slip serves as official proof of employment and income and is widely required for financial and legal transactions.
